Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept. It’s here, transforming industries and influencing thought in profound ways. Our state courts are not immune. So, for eCourts 2024, we got right to the point with our keynote.
“AI is both terrifying and exciting at the same time,” noted Professor Hany Farid during his opening keynote of eCourts 2024, held December 9–11 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nearly 800 attendees packed the Chairman’s Ballroom to hear the opening session, with over a hundred more participating via livestream.
Professor Farid, University of California, Berkeley, noted that AI is no longer a distant concept—it’s here, transforming industries and influencing decisions in profound ways.
Digital forensics plays a critical role in ensuring the authenticity of digital evidence, particularly in an era dominated by AI-generated content like deepfakes, noted Professor Farid. He encourages courts to leverage digital forensic techniques to significantly enhance the reliability of digital evidence.
“As exciting as this technology is, it’s eroding our trust in our country.”

Security Issues Also in Focus
On Tuesday, state court security directors shared how combatting the increasing cyber and physical attacks against the courts requires education and collaboration.
“Our threat landscape is continuously expanding,” said Casey Kennedy, director of information services for the Texas Office of Court Administration.
Kennedy and colleagues Russel Montchal and Chris Palmer recounted a series of cyberattacks on court systems in recent years and the physical attack that killed Maryland Judge Andrew Wilkinson in 2023 to emphasize the need for heightened awareness and action.
The rise of online disinformation and misinformation campaigns aimed to discredit the judiciary and threaten judicial officers is creating new vulnerabilities in both the physical and cyber worlds.
However, by working together, IT and physical security staff can share intelligence to strengthen defenses against cyber and physical attacks on the judiciary.
Fun For the Whole Family
Those who left Las Vegas early to catch their flight home missed one of the highlights of eCourts when NCSC’s Shay Cleary played game show host and led the audience through the largest-ever episode of state court Family Feud.
